These numbers add an extra level of security to transactions where the merchant cannot physically verify that you are the actual cardholder. These transactions are known as card-not-present transactions and include virtually any purchase made with a credit or debit card without the actual physical presence of a debit or credit card.
Since it can be difficult for online merchants to verify that an authorized cardholder is making online purchases, card-not-present transactions can be especially attractive to those looking to commit credit card fraud. The CVV number is one way to prevent this type of fraud, as you typically need to have your credit card in hand to find the CVV number.
Your CVV number won’t protect you if your card is lost or stolen. That person could easily find the CVV number on the back of your card and use it in your name when making purchases.
